
Over the last 50 years the network marketing industry has been in a continuous state of evolution. Where there was once only a handful of companies there are now well over 600 in the U.S. alone. Where there was once only soaps, cosmetics and plastic bowls there are now opportunities offering literally every product and service imaginable. And, where there was once only breakaway style plans with low pay outs and unmanageable group and personal volume requirements (the very first plan, in 1945, required $15,000 in group volume and paid only 3% down one generation) there are now a number of progressive, more contemporary plans that are much more advantageous and workable for the average distributor.
However, there is another revolution taking place within network marketing today. Due to a massive influx of MLM companies in recent years the competition factor has increased dramatically. According to a recent study* the number of network marketing distributors has increased from 6.1 million to 7.2 million between 1991 and 1996. During that same period the number of MLM opportunities has increased from approximately 180 to over 600. The result of this glut of MLM programs is that the average downline today is approximately one-third the size that is was just six years ago. As the supply of opportunities continues to exceed the demand, and as the existing base of distributors continues to be spread thinner and thinner, compensation plans today must be designed to provide the opportunity for a comfortable, secure income with fewer distributors.

Based on this six year survey, 86% of all current, active network marketers realistically desire to achieve a "comfortable full time income" from their network marketing opportunity. When asked to quantify "comfortable," the figures given averaged $5,988 per month, or $71,856 per year (of course, some replied $2,500 per month, while some said $25,000 or more). When asked to list the benefits they wished to receive from this income surprisingly few responded with material items. Instead, most listed time freedom goals (sleep in in the morning, not have to commute, spend more time with family, pursue hobbies/sports, travel more, etc.). These are goals that did not require obscene wealth to achieve (as many MLM programs today will promise you).
Most compensation plans today are designed to create great wealth -- theoretically. Yes, they all will make you rich on paper. However, it is not unusual to discover that plans which pay the most income "potentially" are, in fact, the most difficult for a lot of people to earn a "comfortable" income in. Why? Because the company can only pay out so much in commission, and when that commission is "squeegeed" to the "back end" of the plan (where only a few top distributors earn astronomical, six-digit monthly incomes) the vast majority of people lost out.
On the other end of the spectrum there are plans today that are entirely "front end" weighted (where most of the pay out is concentrated within the first two or three levels). While their efforts are noble and there usually is a dramatic increase in one's ability to make at least a few dollars, this again makes it very difficult for someone to make a comfortable living or incredible income in these plans. It becomes extremely challenging to amass enough downline without the bulk of it falling beyond the limits of the plan.

The vast majority of folks pursuing network marketing today are ideally looking for a "middle weighted" pay plan (although most may not know it!). They desire a plan that perhaps decreases the opportunity for obscene wealth, but significantly increases their opportunity for a comfortable $5-20 thousand per month.
Distributors today want a plan that distributes the commission base more evenly. One that truly "shares the wealth." One that will allow for a comfortable, generous, secure income with fewer downline distributors required to achieve it.
